International Day of The Boy Child
May 24, 2023For many students, the thought of attending a maths or science revision class is enough to induce boredom and dread. But for learners in South Africa, the Primestars Educate Matric Maths and Science Revision programme has completely revolutionized the way they approach these subjects. Using cinemas as a teaching venue, the programme offers an engaging and exciting “theatre of learning” for matric learners from under-resourced schools.
In 2022, over 27,900 students attended the Primestars Educate programme, which consists of 10 pre-recorded revision sessions in maths and science, covering the entire curriculum. The goal is to prepare learners for their final exams, and the results speak for themselves. The programme’s external impact report, based on data gathered from learners’ Grade 11 and matric exams, showed a minimum average improvement of 13% in Mathematics and 11.2% in Physical Science in learners’ results.
But the impact of the programme goes beyond just these impressive numbers. Many individual learners saw exceptional accomplishments, improving their marks by up to 38.7%. The programme helped learners like Fateema Seedat, who now studies Accounting at Wits University after receiving six distinctions in matric, including distinctions for both math and physics.
So, what makes the Primestars Educate programme so effective? Let’s take a closer look at some of the unique aspects of the programme that have led to its success:
Cinemas as Classrooms
One of the key features of the programme is the use of cinemas as teaching venues. This innovative approach provides an immersive and interactive learning experience for learners, and allows them to learn in a comfortable and familiar environment. Sitting next to their friends, learners are able to engage with the material in a way that is both enjoyable and effective.
Theatres of Learning
The Primestars Educate programme is not your typical revision class. Instead, it offers a “theatre of learning” that is both engaging and exciting. The programme uses pre-recorded revision sessions that are designed to keep learners interested and motivated. The sessions are interactive, with quizzes and polls to keep learners engaged and to test their understanding of the material.
Empowering Learners
The Primestars Educate programme is about more than just improving marks. It’s about empowering learners and helping them to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed. By providing a supportive learning environment, the programme helps learners to feel more confident in their abilities and to take ownership of their education.
Investing in South Africa’s Future
The impact of the Primestars Educate programme extends beyond just the learners who attend. By investing in the education of South Africa’s future leaders, the programme is contributing to the development of 4IR-linked skills that are essential for the country’s prosperity. As Primestars MD Martin Sweet notes, “Maths and Science skills are vital if we are to prosper as a country.”
The Primestars Educate Matric Maths and Science Revision programme is a true game-changer in the world of education. By offering an innovative and engaging approach to revision, the programme is helping to transform the lives of learners across South Africa. With the success of the programme in 2022, it’s clear that the impact of Primestars Educate will be felt for many years to come.
