Step up to a Startup

In 2014, we launched a programme that promotes Entrepreneurship, titled “STEP UP 2 A START UP – think big, start small, act now”. The programme aims to inspire and educate school-going learners about the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and the exciting opportunities that exist therein.

Ultimately, the purpose is to assist in growing much needed entrepreneurial skills base amongst youth, thereby reducing the high levels of youth unemployment in South Africa. The programme is presented in an 80 minute feature-film at cinemas locations which have been strategically selected for their convenience and accessibility for the learners. Each movie has the theme of someone commits to forming an enterprise around an idea, and ends when a customer commits to using the product or service.

Each year the movies include further stages of entrepreneurship development, and the specific leadership requirements needed to succeed. Not only do we attempt to create a culture of entrepreneurship, but also a “maker” culture amongst our youth where we require them to identify a problem that they can solve by making something. The buy-line that was chosen echoes the theme – “STEP UP 2 A START UP – DESIGN IT, MAKE IT, SELL IT”.

In line with global trends, our research showed that just as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss to improve systems, invent new approaches, and create solutions to change society for the better.

The aim of the programme is to inspire and upskill South African secondary school learners to find innovative solutions to society’s most pressing challenges.
